Lance Cpl. Andrew Koenig spoke to his mother Monday on a satellite phone borrowed from a reporter after he was struck by a bullet in the front of his helmet.
“I thought I’d been shot in the head, but was somehow still alive,” he said later.
U.S. Marines and Afghan forces continued “Operation Moshtarak,” meaning “joint operation,” to retake the city of Marjah, Afghanistan, from Taliban forces.
